🎭 Beyond the Mask: Why We Hide and How Therapy Helps Us Be Seen

Halloween gives us permission to put on a mask — but for many people, wearing one doesn’t end when the candy runs out.

In daily life, we often hide parts of ourselves behind invisible masks: the “I’m fine” smile at work, the calm parent holding it together, the friend who always listens but rarely shares. These masks can help us feel safe or in control, but over time, they can also make us feel disconnected from who we truly are.

At Greenlake Wellness Group, we understand how heavy those masks can become. Therapy is a space where you don’t have to perform, please, or pretend. It’s a chance to explore what’s underneath — the fears, hopes, and emotions that make you human.

Books like The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk and Set Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra Glover Tawwab remind us that healing often begins when we reconnect with the body and honor our emotions, rather than hiding them. These ideas are at the heart of therapy: learning to listen to ourselves and to show up as we are.

When we remove the mask, even just a little, we make room for genuine connection and healing. That’s where growth begins.

So this Halloween season, as you see costumes and painted faces all around, take a quiet moment to ask yourself: What parts of me have been hidden? And what would it feel like to show up just as I am?

Whether you connect with a therapist through telehealth or in person, Greenlake Wellness offers a safe, supportive space to begin that process.

Let’s help you feel at home in your own skin again — no mask required.
